In the winter of 1987, Mr. Brian Hale was asked for his coaching services by four cricket players. In the following summer, those players showed marked improvement in their cricketing abilities. Subsequently, one of those players Anthony Hadeed, a Markham resident and prominent Markham businessman, was quite insistent that the Canadian youth should also benefit from this level of coaching, and that something more formal should be set up. With agreement from Mr. Brian Hale, the Cricket Academy was formed in 1991 and the first outdoor coaching clinic was held in Markham. Mr. Hale served as President of the Markham Cricket Association for 10 years, helping to further cricket in the Markham area. The Cricket Academy has been running for the past 18 years. In the winter of 2004 because of the large number of Markham junior residents participating in the Academy, Mr Hale re-joined forces with Mr. Hadeed in forming a branch of the Academy called the Markham Cricket Academy or MCA. The MCA is a member of the Markham Sports Council and has been an active contributor to the Council in bringing cricket to the youth of Markham. The Academy focuses on young players between the ages of 5 to 19 years old, and the MCA is currently in negotiations with the Town of Markham to become one of the clubs to be housed at the new cricket ground on Elson Road near Markham Road and Steeles. All youth who are interested in joining the MCA can contact Anthony Hadeed at 905-477-6375 x 227 or Brian Hale at 416-451-6147 or via E-mail at brianhale@acncanada.net.
The Academy focusses on U-13, U-15, U-17, and U-19 age groups. To date the Academy has exposed their Junior Players to many overseas tours - Guyana 2000, Devonshire England 2002, Trinidad 2004, Lancashire England 2005 , Barbados 2006, San Jose California 2007, and St. Kitts 2008. The President Mr. Hale asserts that MCA will always be about testament not titles or trophies. MCA would like to recognize the students for their respect, the parents for their unwavering support and friends/supporters for having the interest of the Academy at heart.
